Electric Machines for Propulsion

LaunchPoint Technologies has been developing high specific power, high efficiency electric machines for the demanding, high-reliability applications associated with hybrid electric UAV flight.  The machines are an axial flux (“pancake”) design based on dual-halbach-array magnet rotors and ironless stators.  This combination of design features allows for an extremely high efficiency UAV motor, generator, or starter/alternator with excellent specific power.  The UAV motors, generators, and starter/alternators are air cooled and create their own air flow so no additional cooling system or fan is required. LaunchPoint's hybrid electric UAV motors, generators, and starter/alternators will enhance payload, mission time, survivability and efficiency.

      • 10 kW at 7,500 rpm
      • 16 kW at 12,000 rpm
      • 1.5 kg mass (electric machine only)
      • 6.6 kW/kg @ 7,500 rpm
      • 10 kW/kg @ 12,000 rpm

Electric machines can scale to large sizes.
Proposed 1 MW motor:

      • 200 m/s tip speed
      • 1 MW at 6,000 RPM
      • ~70 kg (projected)
      • 95% efficient
      • 26” diameter
      • Up to 13 kW/kg
